Rafael Untalan is a regional theatre actor and educator, presently based out of Washington, D.C. He earned his MFA from the Academy for Classical Acting at the George Washington University. He is “Hapa:” -- of mixed Asian Pacific Islander descent, and hails from Portland, Oregon, where he did his initial training at the Portland Actors Conservatory, and tread the local boards for several years before heading to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF). Since then he appeared in numerous theatres across the country.
In three seasons at OSF, Rafael appeared as Paris in Romeo and Juliet, Jacques de Boys/Ensemble in As You Like It, Ensemble in The Cherry Orchard; Cleomenes/Shepherd in The Winter's Tale, D’Artagnan/Gascon Guard in Cyrano de Bergerac, Lord Stanley/Ensemble in Richard III, The Sea Captain/1st Officer in Twelfth Night, Beelzebub/Devil’s Wife in The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus. At other theatres, his credits include: Shag in Equivocation (Virginia Repertory Theatre), Marcus Gee in Yellow Face (Theater J), Bosola in The Duchess of Malfi (We Happy Few), Rama in The Ramayana (A Contemporary Theatre), Oberon/Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Virginia Shakespeare Festival), Daimon/Saru in Anime Momotaro (Imagination Stage), Orsino in Twelfth Night (Austin Shakespeare), Don Adriano de Armado in Love’s Labor’s Lost, Melantius in The Maid’s Tragedy (The Shakespeare Theatre/Academy for Classical Acting); Thor/Baldur/Volund in In The Northern Lands, Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities (Seattle Children’s Theatre), Leontes in The Winter’s Tale, Venticello in Amadeus (Marin Shakespeare Company), Sebastian in Twelfth Night (Theatreworks), Valentin in Kiss of the Spiderwoman (Borderlands Theatre, Tucson, AZ), Lorca in a White Suit in Lorca in a Green Dress, Bridegroom in Blood Wedding, Aldo in The True History of Coca-Cola in Mexico, The Sergeant in Sirena, Queen of the Tango (Miracle Theatre, Portland), Macduff in Macbeth, Iachimo in Cymbeline, Orlando in As You Like It, Nym/Exeter/Constable in Henry V (Quintessence, Portland), Deeley in Old Times (defunkt theatre), Percy Bysshe Shelley in Bloody Poetry (Cygnet Theatre), John in Money Shot (Stark Raving Theatre, Portland), George in In the Air (Theatre Vertigo), Ross in Macbeth (Tygres Heart Shakespeare, Portland).
